Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica 2019

Cocles is a surf beach and is great for people watching and wave watching It is visible from the road as you drive by. We went on the only rainy day we had, along with everyone else so it was BUSY. NOTE: normally they don't let kids under 7 in to the monkey cage - so prepare your little ones in advance so they aren't disappointed!! The air is always warm and comfortable and we had absolutely no trouble with bugs. We felt completely safe the entire time. Safety: I was a bit concerned about safety before coming here as I had read a few strands and blogs on it and had heard mixed reviews. Also, please go to Veronica's in Puerto Viejo - raw and vegan food, but Veronica herself is an amazing woman to meet and talk to! We loved the quiet, the great restaurants at least 5 or 6 , the grocery store, the laid back character and, of course, the beach! Just imagine: wake up, put on the coffee, sit in your living room with a cup of coffee surrounded by jungle and its incredible symphony of sounds. Saw lots of creepy crawlies, monkeys, toucans, and he let us sample several jungle delicacies. We will be returning to the area and to the Sloth House. We found it a bit long wearing long sleeves and pants in the hot jungle , especially for our 6 year old, but definitely doable. Playa Chiquita is the most picturesque and lovely place on the planet. And we were all charmed by this magical magical place! The bedrooms 3 are enclosed and are large and spacious with comfy beds wiht mosquito netting. The end: It wasn't as humid or buggy as I'd imagined. We stayed here in January and it is really special. The bedrooms 3 are enclosed and are large and spacious with comfy beds. Low on the touristy spectrum, but touristy enough to have all the amenities that we were hoping for. From the comfort of our own couch in our outdoor living room, we saw howler monkeys, toucans, loads of spiders and weird huge bugs, sloths, aguti large rodents that are timid and interesting. The house: spacious outdoor living. Believe everything positive you've read here; Sonia and Pepo are lovely hosts, and it is clear that they genuinely want you to enjoy their beautiful lodge. We spent a great day there swimming and playing.{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} We ate at Botanica Organica wonderful breakfast and lunch in Playa Chiquita which to me, doesn't get any better. Manzanillo is at the very end of the main road that leads from Puerto Viejo through to Cocles, on to Playa Chiquita, then to Punta Uva and ending at Manzanillo. So the So the outdoor space is wonderful. We had a 4-wheel drive option but never needed it. We never made it to Punta Uva. It seemed to us that most eateries boasted "from scratch" food, including home made breads, jams, nut butters, etc. It is right by Playa Chiquita back from the road. We family with two daughters aged 2 and 5 stayed at the sloth house, a private vacation rental that is managed by Pepo and Sonia of La Kukula Lodge. It is wonderful. I would highly recommend staying in the Playa Chiquita area. I can't think of anything that was missing. Puerto Viejo is a fun party town, but I would not want to be staying right in it. I enjoyed the Playa Chiquita area the most. For us, it was a picnic spot. At the Sloth house, you are surrounded by lots of amenities, but not in the thick of things. I felt truly welcome. The water is cool and refreshing and we swam in it times per day. We family with one child, aged 6 stayed at the sloth house, a private vacation rental that is managed by Pepo and Sonia of La Kukula Lodge. They only do tours at and I don't think you can visit at any other time because they don't want to stress out the animals. I can't imagine not feeling safe here. The 2 bathrooms are large, spacious, both have double sinks with good showers with lots of hot water and good pressure. Bring or rent a GPS!!! The location was great for us, as I was set on some real quiet The creatures created a white noise that I should have recorded for future use, and Howler Monkeys at 4am were absolutely part of the charm. Poas was a good rental company in our opinion. Elsewhere we saw many of the same as well as some white-faced monkeys at Cahuita National Park. Then reward yourself with a huge lunch and fresh juice at Maxi's! Wildlife: Abundant. Whenever the temperature got to the kids, in they jumped! We were in our glory. The living room and dining room are all outdoors and overlook the jungle. The pool: The house has its own private pool. It is comfortable and well conceived, without being so hermetically sealed as to destroy the feeling of actually being in the Jungle. I didn't meet Sonia, but Pepo at La Kukula was very helpful and nice. You can sit there for hours and watch the wildlife which is literally all around you. Stay here is is a really special place and really reasonably priced. The Food: Food around here is amazing. It is very hot and we prefer the sounds of the jungle to the sounds of the party. No tall buildings, no franchises of any kind, just lots of character and all sorts of people natives, expats, backpackers, surfers, Rastas, families, singles, you name it Because of this mix, there is truly something for everyone. It is incredibly clean and appears to be quite new. It may have felt a bit different if we were staying right in Puerto Viejo, I can't say. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}I copied alot of this review from the person who reviewed on Feb 24, because her review was so excellent and accurate! The Beaches: Wow!!! It is paradise. You'll grow to love the jungle symphony playing all night! Sights: Jaguar Rescue Centre was a highlight for me. It is such a happy and peaceful place. You need to follow jungle paths to get to it which, of course, adds to its beauty tenfold. It is only accessible by foot and you will not see it from the road. Other visitors have described it more thoroughly. A lot of people rent bikes which is a good alternative but if you want to explore all the beaches and get out and about a car is really useful. Everything about this vacation was unbelievable. Pepo organized a jungle tour with Raymond in Manzanillo. They have an office near Puerto Viejo so it would have been convenient if we'd had a problem. Wow, wow, wow. This was an amazing vacation, and the star of the show was La Kukula. It is a great beach with direct access to the road. Definitley felt safe all the time. From the comfort of our own couch in our outdoor living room, we saw howler monkeys, toucans, loads of spiders and weird huge bugs, sloths, an opossum, and red eyed tree frogs well, we didn't see them from our couch, we had to go turn over some leaves after dark to see them, but still on our property. I was interested to learn that you can stay there cheaply and volunteer. Other than that, there are none. So interesting. The area: We loved this area. Their passion and knowledge is unparalled. Pros Amazing showers - the best in Costa Rica Lovely rooms which were really clean with your own balcony and hammock Pepo and Sonia looked after us amazingly well and every day showed us where all the wildlife was around the grounds AMAZING mojitos - seriously they are the best I have ever tasted Lovely breakfasts in a gorgeous setting Cons - The only thing I would say is it is useful to have a car. The stairs in are easy for kids to navigate and the depth goes from about 3 feet to about 5 feet. The lodge is clean and spare and nearly perfect. But in Playa Chiquita, we were completely comfortable. Definitely something I'd look into down the road when my son is older. We didn't see Punta Uva but heard it's excellent as well. We walked in and the main lounge area and restaurant are all open to the jungle. Snakes, monkeys, owls, birds of prey, big cats, the wandering deer, baby sloths held only be volunteers , howler monkeys, and many others are housed there.
